Poetry Cycle Assignment Rita Dove

Go over Mandolin section:

Reader Response to a Poem:

Select one of the poems in "Thomas and Beulah". How does the poem make you feel? In what ways can you relate to the poem? What has Rita Dove done with imagery, form, theme, rhythm, language, etc. to make this poem work? Any lines that particularly strike you as interesting or powerful? Think about poetic technique: enjambment, caesura, metaphor, simile, alliteration, assonance, consonance, linebreaking, stanzaic form, apostrophe, onomatopeaia, etc.

Post your response

Begin working on Poetry Cycle assignment:
Similar to Thomas and Beulah, consider some characters in your own life, imagined characters, or actual historical characters. Imagine the significant chronological dates in their lives--high points and low points. consider how to construct a series of 8-10 (preferably more) poems that tell a story (narrative poetry) and explore these key moments and occasions.

  • a. Your poetry cycle should consist of 8-10 poems
  • b. Your poetry cycle should be accompanied by a chronology to support the key dates and occasions you chose to write about.
  • c. At least two of the poems should explore the same event from two different perspectives or viewpoints (like "Courtship" in Thomas and Beulah). These poems can have the same title.
  • d. Place one poem per page, single-spaced, 12 point type in a clean font and be sure to title each poem. you may want to title the entire cycle as well. Use italics for dialogue, songs, memories, etc as you observe in Rita Dove's work. Experiment with different stanzaic forms and poetic styles.
  • e. Poems can, of course, be narrative or lyric, but remember that the overall cycle is a narrative and must tell a story of a life or lives although we only see "fragments" or moments/snapshot

  1. That was intense. He obviously was very enthusiastic about what he believed and he communicated this to a larger audience. There are many videos similar to this one already out there however each seems to portray a different perspective, and a different tone than the others. It was a powerful video and the message was clear.

  2. Radezia's morning reflection was very powerful. It calls attention to such a major issue in American society. It is heartbreaking that we as a people and as a nation are still faced with a struggle that weighs us down as much as this. We need change.l

  3. I thought this video was so powerful. The man speaking had so much emotion and it really hooked me to hear his pain in his voice. Everything he said was true and I agreed with everything. These days we run from cops even if we did nothing wrong. We were not taught to run, but shamefully, it is in our instinct to do so.

  4. I really like the morning reflection. I liked how it showed different footage of police brutality. This video shows the many truths of brutality. I also liked the message of the video. My favorite part was the end, when he said that "he would get shot if he released this", and then he does. I think it adds to the video's message and makes it even more powerful.

  5. Radezia's morning reflection was really deep! I liked how the man made a play on words about cops, how it stands for criminals of permission and how it related to the word "ops". The videos were really graphic in the video when it came to police brutality and I really didn't know that cops did things like that so often. I really do feel that some police do take advantage of their authority and they get away with way too many unjust actions. However I think that this portrayal of cops is making the negative connotations towards them grow and at the end of the day we all depend on them and are going to need to rely on them in at least one situation in our lifetimes.

  6. That was a really powerful video. You could tell that he was very angry about the terrible actions the some police have been committing lately, and he should be. The fact that, as he said, the police are allowed to beat on the people they are supposed to be protecting. Something needs to change about the system we live under.

  7. The direct use of satire in the video was incredibly effective. The open, vulgar language combined with the aggression of the speaker really helped to bring across the tone and message of the song. The start, with him watching the videos, and then breaking out into a rage essentially parallels the typically reaction of the public when they learn about such crises. The visuals were also very powerful. The graphic content shows no boundaries on how terrible police brutality in America can be. I felt like a video like this is very important; its doesn't beat around the bush, it speaks on whats on everyone's' minds.

  8. This video is among the many, many actions against Police brutality, which is very progressive in my opinion. It's great to have people speaking out and fighting for social justice. Police Brutality is a LARGE issue in America and there are several forms of it, be that sexual or racial discrimination. A line that really spoke to me was "Police murder with permission", this is the harsh and disturbing truth about our police system in America.

  9. no one ever said the world was fair and kind but people have been put in power to keep stability. combined with superiority, to much power can cause a misuse. these people are supposed to protect not neglect. To many people with to much power and one leader, can get out of control.

  10. I chose this topic for the morning reflection because lately there has been a lot of police brutality against minorities. I'm not saying that all police are abusing their authority but some are. I honestly can say that when I was in elementary I admired police officers. I was taught they were to protect our life, and lately they've been endangering it. I'm scared of the police, and I feel like my skin color could probably one day determine my death if I ever had contact with the police.

  11. Radezia's morning reflection was really really good. It was so powerful and I agreed with every word he said. When a a person does a crime they go to jail, when a cop does something they just get suspended. Cops basically have permission to abuse people and its not right. I think that every cop should definitely have a camera on them when they are working. I think it would really help stop all this. Cops are people just like every one else, and when they commit a crime they should get the same consequences we get. Police really take advantage of their authority.
