How to Use Your 5 Senses to Create a Setting

Next, spend some time thinking about your story's setting. If it's a place you've been to, you might look at old photographs, maps or diary entries and see what jumps out at you. What made you connect to this place? If you have not been to this place, look at some books or check out the place online.
  1. Start with sight, which is for many of us the most immediate sense. Write down every image that comes to mind, whether it pertains to your story or not. Free associate. It doesn't have to make sense or be grammatically correct. Just get down as much as you can. For instance, if you've been to the desert in Tucson, Arizona at night, picture the cactus, vast expanse, clay color, brightness from the night sky and mountains in the background.
  2. Repeat the above for taste, smell, sound and touch. Again, don't be afraid of unconventional answers. You never know what might end up in your final story.
  3. Finally, in one line sum up the feeling you hope to evoke in your readers through your setting. Is it a feeling of loneliness, menace, nostalgia, contentment?
Look at the lists you've compiled. Which elements will contribute to this dominant mood? Which elements will complicate that mood? Which will distract from it?
This exercise can also be used for imaginary settings. In fact, for science fiction and fantasy, it's even more important.

  1. I'm confident that I've seen this Warner Bros. animation at least fifty times. I had a VHS of a bunch of Looney Toons/Merrie Melodies cartoons as a kid and all I would do was watch them at repeat, laughing at jokes that I had heard dozens of times. It was nice to watch this again after not seeing it for like, eleven years.

  2. The cartoon was funny and it also showed the difference between early animation and animation today.

  3. Cartoons usually include a moral or lesson to learn in their clips. This particular one was saying to not always take the easy way out of things. Both men in the video had good paying jobs but once they found the singing frog they though they could make easy and fast money. That isn't how it works. The first man couldn't make any money off the frog and he was put in a mental ward. It shows how you have to earn your money.

  4. The cartoon was entertaining. The message of this cartoon in my opinion was that things don't always work out the way you want them to.

  5. It was a pretty funny and enjoyable cartoon. I think the lesson that was presented in this cartoon was to not take advantage of people or use their talent for your benefit.

  6. This morning reflection was very amusing to me. Watching cartoons in the morning is a great way to start the day. The things that were going on in the story were very funny. The man was cleaning an old monument and then found a box with a singing frog, then he wanted to share it with the world to become famous and rich, but every time he invited people to look at it, it always stopped singing and act like a regular frog. In 2056, the story repeated itself with a different person. It's funny because they thought he was going insane when the frog was the one who didn't want to show his talent to the people. I really enjoy old cartoons. Sometimes things to work certain ways because if you get it, it might affect you in a bad way.

  8. I love this cartoon its been a while since I've seen some Warner brothers cartoons and its a great refresher. Side note: Animation has come so far, you can see where they would keep previous frames and the animations looks stop motionless with the lack of in between frames you see today.

  10. I know I have seen that cartoon before but it's been years. I used to watch Looney Toons all the time with my sisters so seeing one again was nostalgic. It's interesting how that basic plot of, no one but this one person is seeing this unbelievable thing and the minuet someone else is there it stops, it's such a cliche basic premise now but then it was much more original at the time.

  12. This cartoon captured my attention. It was entertaining. I've seen this before in other cartoons, where a person wants to find something, show it to someone, but they can't do so. So everyone thinks they're crazy. I think this is trying to teach a lesson/ he's trying to utilize the frog's talent so that he can get wealthy. He doesn't achieve his goal and he becomes broke. I liked this cartoon

  13. This animation shows the greed in people and how it can also ruin them. Why they chose a frog to represent this is beyond me.

  14. I think that greed was shown in this cartoon, the man was so money hungry that he tried several times to make a profit from the singing frog. The more he tried the more it backfired on him causing him to ruin his reputation or put a dent in it. Another thing shown in this cartoon was the fact that something preposterous or unbelievable was happening and no one believed it because it was ridiculous. This shows that on a daily basis something extraordinary happens but no one ever believes it because sometimes only one lucky person is their to witness it. I believe cartoons are great ways to relay messages or teach lessons because it brings a sense of humor and entertainment while getting a point across. It teaches people whether they are children, teens, or adults about life lessons, and they do it in a way that will help them understand and make them laugh at the same time.

  15. This cartoon showed that you have to work hard for what you want and you can't get anything easily. This showed that its best if you do your own thing because that way you'll feel true satisfaction and feel true success. When he tried to use the frog, he didn't find success even though he thought he would.

  16. This video was entertaining while it also showed how greedy we as humans can be. It gave a lesson while not making me fall asleep from being bored.
