Austin & Jaymee 9. It has to do with an attempt to shield oneself from outside influence and to keep part of oneself form themselves, especially since the characters in the book give so much of themselves to other people.
2. Flowers have different connotations for each of the major characters: for Virginia, the roses around the bed of the dead bird signify rest and funereal blankness. Clarissa takes great pleasure in the flowers she buys. She brings Richard flowers to brighten his dark apartment, and she brings some home to spruce up her own apartment. For Sally, a perfect cluster of roses is a present that she can knows Clarissa will appreciate.
3. I think the book is trying to tell us that insanity comes in all shapes and sizes, and that insanity isn't always something that we can see. Insanity can hide itself behind close doors.
4. This fact indicates that as humans we will always be imprisoned by society but some things will change. Also, this indicates that there will always be a taboo.
5.Living to fill a role is very much a universal feeling, I find instances where i feel the same way, for example being a student. The price Virginia Woolf pays for refusing to act a role is her life.
11. In life we always miss out on chances because of several different reasons such as fear or lack of confidence. Everyone regrets something that they have or have not done in their life whether they are young or of old age. I don’t believe that Clarissa and Richard would have been any happier than they are now if they would have stayed together. This is because Richard and Clarissa still love each other even though they are in relationship with different people. Clarissa and Richard never walked out of each other’s lives so that bond that they had years ago is not broken. 12. I believe the final relinquishment of youth in the novel is mostly about lost chances. For instance Clarissa her relinquishment of youth was when she and Richard were no longer together. For Richard it was the chance to have a positive relationship with his mother. That is probably why he is the most resistant to changing. Relinquishing your youth is all about taking responsibility and in this case it is about the characters taking responsibility for the choices they never made.
13. To characters such as Richard and Virginia the idea of death is like a weight being lifted off their shoulders. A chance to finally be free from the burden of confusion and pain. Clarissa’s viewpoint on life is not as clear as Richards or Virginia’s so I’d like to think she is a survivor based off her strong will and ability to move forward. Laura does not like the idea of death nor does she hate it. She accepts it as her only option out due to the era she lives in and how women are supposed to be during that time period. However she decides to live because she does not think it is right to take a life away from someone who had no choice (Her Baby). What separates the survivors from the suicides is the amount of self-worth. If you feel that you have nothing to offer the world than what is you reason for living?
14. No and Yes because the Hours has several different settings and plots and although they are all connected someway there are some story lines that stray off the path of the two books being similar. The characters that correspond with those in Wolf’s novel are mostly Richard and Laura. They are similar in their feelings about life and death and it is different in that some characters value life more and have a more positive spirit then Ms. Dalloway.
15. The different genders changed relationships the most. For instance with Clarissa and Richard, they really did love each other. However I believe that Richard seeing his mother kiss another women affected him a bit with his sexual orientation which is why he left Clarissa for a man. Also I believe that is why Clarissa began to date women. So she could understand Richard more. 16. It is all about time and the hours that go by as you live every day. The title was appropriate because it talks about the timeline in every character life and how they correspond with one another.
