  1. What Rita Dove had to say about Shakespeare, I felt very strongly. Children are taught to think in a certain way, like that Shakespeare is supposed to be hard, for example. If a child goes into something with an open and eager mind, they can learn. This also went together with a quote from her that I found on poetry foundation when I was reading that. Reading has always been something to fuel my imagination, as Rita Dove feels as well, but I never really think about the people that are afraid to read. The people that refuse to read because it's hard, when that's exactly the reason why they SHOULD read. Also, even when talking, Dove's language is very flowery (yes, it's an interview, but still).

  2. I find it interesting how her parents normalized the act of bringing a book to the dinner table. It sounds quite odd, however it does seem like a great alternative for having a phone at the dinner table in the present day. By doing this, a kid is more likely to get into the habit of reading more and pushing themselves academically. Which Dove's own parents didn't have to do too much of because of her parents implementing the idea of "Did you do you best?" allowing her and siblings not to feel overwhelmed with school and enabling them to create their own work ethic that they could still strive off of. I think this is a great way of parenting.

  3. I enjoyed they interview clip Rita is interesting. She starting to make me like reading when I didn't. She make reading sound interesting and fun like when she talked about how she match her food with the books that was weird, but it made me interested. I really enjoyed the end when she talked about school and her grades that she brought home to her parents. And when they said "did you do the best that you could" that made me realize that getting a C+ isn't bad long as I tried the hardest that I could if I couldn't get an A, but I tried then that's understandable.

  4. I really enjoyed hearing her talk about how much she loves to read and I feel kind of inspired to pick up a book again. She talks about the curiosity of children which I definitely agree existed when I was younger, but as reading became a chore in middle and high school, it became harder to do it for fun. We read so many classics that are seen as necessary to our education but we read them just to read them and because of that there is less engagement with our own lives.

  5. I thought it was interesting how Rita decides to write about the body. Her explanation for it was intriguing and different because we're taught to be ashamed of our bodies and to not talk about it. I liked how she said that poetry can maintain the quality of intimacy. She is a raw and honest poet who writes about topics that raise questions and ideas.

  6. Hearing Rita Dove talk about how much she likes to read reminded me of myself because I used to read so much when I was in elementary school. I enjoyed reading all different kids of books, and it also made me sad because I'm realizing now that I don't read nearly as much as I used too.

  7. Hearing her speak about reading with such passion made me kind of sad. I used to feel that way and would look forward to curling up with a book, But lately, reading has become something stressful. I am so overloaded with things to read that it becomes a source of anxiety. Reading is no longer something I get to do for myself anymore, but something I have to do to finish an assignment and get a grade, which takes the magic out of it. I think that this is causing a dip in my creativity and motivation. It makes me happy to know that Rita Dove feels similarly about Shakespeare. I agree that Shakespeare has been given a reputation of being unattainable, which takes away from people seeing it's beauty.

  9. Hearing how much she liked reading kind of made me laugh but it also threw me off a little bit because it wasn't like just a hobby of hers reading was like her passion she almost never went a day without reading and she even read at the dinner table. I personally do like reading but only certain dramas its not just reading as a whole completes me. Where as Rita just has a love for books period.

  10. While watching the Rita Dove Interview there were many things I could relate too. When I was younger reading was difficult for me but I loved the way reading would take me to a different world. Which is also why I believe I love writing so much as well. Rita Dove is also truly an inspiration because she is an African American female writing who says she doesn't settle for nothing less than the best. But not the best for everyone else, her own strength. What she believed deep in herself was her best and I also try to be that way when I complete anything. I try to complete everything I do to my absolute best. Rita Dove is an excellent writing and has many great ideas for writer and even just people who need a little more encouragement. Also, of course for being an inspiration for young writers like me.

  11. As I watched Rita Dove talk about her experience with books, and Shakespeare specifically I felt fascinated and almost envious of her enjoyment of books. With so many distractions and limitations to enjoying a book today, finding the time and finding the fun in it, is not as easy, for me at least. But it is wonderful to hear her talk about that passion and wanting to fully immerse herself in whatever story she was/is reading.

  12. The interview was great and I view her poems a little differently. She puts so much passion into her work and I am jealous of her. I care more about the grade I get than enjoying and being passionate about the work I do. I rarely find as much enjoyment in reading books today than I did two years ago. Her interview really made me reflect on my own circumstances.

  13. Rita Dove's experience about reading was good for her. She enjoyed reading and did it for her own good. I do not relate to her because I only read when I have to. I read for a grade and to get assignments done. She reads for fun and makes time for it.
