The Hours/Motif Project

AGENDA:

THINK, PAIR, SHARE AND POST A RESPONSE TO THESE QUESTIONS:

9. Each of the three principal women is acutely conscious of her inner self or soul, slightly separate from the "self" seen by the world. Clarissa’s "determined, abiding fascination is what she thinks of as her soul" [p. 12]; Virginia "can feel it inside her, an all but indescribable second self, or rather a parallel, purer self. If she were religious, she would call it the soul . . . It is an inner faculty that recognizes the animating mysteries of the world because it is made of the same substance" [pp. 34-35]. Which characters keep these inner selves ruthlessly separate from their outer ones? Why?

10. Each of the novel’s characters sees himself or herself, most of the time, as a failure. Virginia Woolf, as she walks to her death, reflects that "She herself has failed. She is not a writer at all, really; she is merely a gifted eccentric" [p. 4]. Richard, disgustedly, admits to Clarissa, "I thought I was a genius. I actually used that word, privately, to myself" [p. 65]. Are the novel’s characters unusual, or are such feelings of failure an essential and inevitable part of the human condition?

WRITING:
Start work on your MOTIF project:
Your next assignment will be to write in a genre you are most comfortable with (poetry, fiction or drama). The work needs two historical time periods and needs to weave in motifs in both time periods.
.

Homework:  Read to pg. 152 in The Hours.  Reading quiz on Friday.

    9. Laura Brown is the character that keeps all of her inner turmoil to herself. She separates her own inner emotions and opinions from her actions around her son, and especially around her husband. She is afraid of breaking from the mold of the perfect household in a way that other people can see. She is constricted by the expectations of her society.
    10. Humans feel as though they fail all the time, it is a part of Piaget's 8 stages in psychology. People are always striving to be better, and to win all the time. No one can win every time, so humans naturally will feel as though they have failed in some aspect of their life or some goal.

  2. 9. Laura Brown keeps her inner emotions to herself due to the expectations of american society during the 1950s and is afraid to break this stereotypical housewife. She separates herself from her son and her husband to prevent them to get hurt by her actions and decisions.

    10. Humans have always felt in one way or another that they have failed. We have this goal that we have to be better and be successful due to how successful others are. We aren't always successful in every decision we make, which makes us feel like that if we aren't successful, that we failed in life.

  3. 9. In the 1950's Laura is to keep to herself about her emotions and opinions. She does not want to hurt her husband and son's feelings and is trying to live up the normal housewife standards.
10.When you feel as if you are not able to succeed in life you want to give up and feel as if you failed in life. Its part of human emotions to feel like that. Eventually you would want to strive in life and make it better for yourself.

  4. 9.Laura is the typical house wife who distances herself from her family from her unstable mindset and bad decisions she wans to make. She doesn't want to break the house wife character because of the time period they were in and especially society.
10.Failure is apart of human life. It is as if we suffer or take a lost from here and there or even for once in our life which can only make us stronger. Goals aren't always going to be the simplest to accomplish there are obstacles that will challenge us, it can only make us stronger or weaker depending on how bad we want it.

  5. 9. Laura is probably the most accurate example of a character who keeps her inner, most honest feelings to herself. She tries to fit into the mold of the perfect trophy wife and mother. However, inside she is deteriorating from unhappiness. She is forced to be a certain way due to the expectations of society and that time period.
10.The feeling of failure and never being good enough is prevalent in almost all people. You could be the best at something and still have insecurities. This is especially prevalent in those who work in the arts fields such as Virginia Woolf who is a writer and Richard as well. Those who work in artistic fields feel this pressure more because artistic careers are looked down upon as uncertain and they feel they have to compensate for that. That is why their feeling of failure is somewhat greater than those who work 'average' jobs. Nonetheless, the feeling of failure is a problem for everyone.

  6. 9. Laura keeps all of her emotions bottled up, so she keeps all of her inner emotions to herself. She tries to put on a brave face for her son, who doesn't know how sad his mother is because she doesn't let on how sad she is. She feels restricted by the standard of how women of her time are forced to live.

    10. Humans have that feeling inside of them that lead them to critique themselves, regardless of whether they deserve it or not. We feel like it is our primary goal in life to be better and more successful than we were previously. We aren't always successful, which lead us to assume that we have failed before we actually have.

  8. 9. Laura Brown keeps all of her feelings inside, she's trying not to break the role as a housewife even though it is expected to be that's the way American society was back in the 1950s. As also she doesn't want to hurt no one around her especially her son.

    10. The novel's characters are not unusual to think that they are failure. It's part of the human life to have feelings of failure since sometimes we are unsuccessful with things that we want to achieve.

    9. Laura doesn’t tell anybody her thoughts and feelings. She keeps them to herself. During the 1950’s women really allowed to express their feelings. They had to just be a stay at home mom and a house wife. She leaves her husband and son so they don’t get hurt by what she did.
10.when a person keeps their feeling to themselves they start to think about things that may or may not have a positive or negative effect going on with them. we feel it is our need to make everyone else happy but ourselves. even if we aren't good with that. if we feel like nothing then it makes us feel like we got nothing

  11. 9) Laura Brown keeps all of her inner conflicts and fears to herself. She doesn't want to break or damage the housewife role that she has and that causes her to keep everything inside because of that fear of ruining her household.
    10) The concept of failure is a natural part of human nature. Failure is what make humans want to strive and be better than what they are now. Without this idea of failure no one would see any rom for improvement and that would cause the society to be at a stand still. Failure is an essential element in human nature.
