Mexican Traditions

Setting is an important element to this book. Laura Esquivel writes from what she knows. As she wades through this story about a woman who wants to seek out her passions, it is clear that she infuses her writing from her own background.

Remember that Like Water for Chocolate is a flashback story. It begins and ends with the a woman telling the story of her great aunt Tita. This present day setting acts as a frame through the story.

The bulk of the story revolves around a young girl, Tita, fighting against the traditions and issues that are relevant during the turn of the twentieth century in Mexico.

So, what are those traditions?

I'd like you to work together to find background information about these five topics:

Food

Fabrics

Family/Women’s Role

Mexican Revlution/Flag

Cultural Rituals – Religion/Tradition

Each of you should find one fact or website or youtube video about each of these topics and your contributions here:

So, the question is, How does YOUR background influence your writing?

  3. How to take the country out of a girl… (And replace it with the city.)
    You will need:
    -A large boiling pot.
    -Heels (Stilettos if possible)
    -Skinny Jeans
-A nice shirt. (One that’s a bolder color, or has a unique style)
    -Accessories! (Bracelets, necklaces, Bow’s, etc.)
    *Spurs from cowgirl boots.
    Instructions:
1.) Fill the large boiling pot with water a little past the half way mark.
2.) Turn heat on and wait for water to boil.
3.) Add heels, skinny jeans, and shirt.
4.) As the items from number three begin to become affected by the heat, add the accessories you’ve chosen one by one.
5.) Once the materials seem to have dissolved/are fully cooked turn heat off.
6.) Pour finished soup/broth into a bowl, eating carefully in order to keep from burning your mouth.
*If you wish to not fully turn into a city girl, and still have some country aspects, add spurs into boiling water after you are finished adding the accessories.
