Some of the things that make this story funny is that he talks to the terd like its a pet actually telling it to go away and the fact that he is talking about a situation that makes other people uncomfortable.
Sedaris makes this story funny because it is relatable. Everyone has had embarrassing moments in their life that they're still embarrassed to admit. It was funny how he related to the turd as "this thing". While in the 21 Down story is humorous because many older people brag that they finished a crossword faster than another. While it also makes it even funnier because I believe my grandparents do them as well.
The person knocking on the door in this essay adds extra tension to the situation. Sedaris' failed attempts to flush away the turd also make it more funny. It's an action that's hard and frustrating to do, that has the potential to be funny.

I think that the most funny thing in "Big Boy" is the subject matter. We don't expect to hear about giant turds in writing. It catches us off guard which makes us equal parts uncomfortable and amused. He is also talking about a shared human experience of trying to avoid embarrassment at all costs and making fun of his own concern over what his friends will think of him.
Just the idea of a encountering a big turd is very relatable to the audience. It's just an overall awkward situation to be in and Sedaris delivers and describes the actions with exaggeration which makes it even funnier. He characterizes "The Big Turd" as some sort of final boss or villain and he makes fun of himself as he tries to do whatever he can to defeat it. The small bits of dialogue and the dialogue between him and the turd also makes the story better. These all and more add to an excellently written humor story.
"Big Boy" is funny because Sedaris uses a topic that is usually silly to everyone and dedicates a whole essay to it. It is something you might not usually expect when reading through essays and the idea of a huge, giant turd floating in the toilet is very descriptive and amusing to the reader.
Big Boy was way more funny to me than 21 down. It was relatable. It was funny when he talked about how he basically played dumb and tried to look for the person that left the turd knowing it was him. The story was interesting and I can picture everything. I can even picture the turd going in a lazy circle as he described. The most funniest part in Big Boy was when he was going to grab the turd with his hand then realized how disgusting that would've been.
Big Boy is funny because it is a common experience but he makes it very dramatic and that's funny. Another thing that he does is make the whole thing not mean anything, so it it's all ridiculous.

Jonaya Wright One thing that makes Big Boy so funny is the title. I don't know what you would think of when hearing Big Boy but it is not someone talking to a turd while trying to get it out of his sight. The other thing I found quite funny was also the way he had to take the fall no matter what, he had to announce that he was going into the bathroom. Which was a setup from the beginning. Lastly, the last thing that gave me a chuckle was the fact of not knowing who left this turd for him to deal with? As well as wondering if anyone will come up and be the big guy as they claim their turd.
