Second Person Stories/A Prayer for the Dying

AGENDA:

Continue working on second person short stories.

Please answer and post a comment on the following questions about A Prayer for the Dying:

3. Why does Jacob elect to bleed and treat the bodies of some victims, even after Doc has told him not to, and even though he knows he’s putting himself in danger? Why is precision and diligence so important to him even when everyone around him is worried only about survival?
4. What role does religious faith play in the story? How does it influence Jacob, Chase, and other citizens of Friendship? Is their faith rewarded?
5. Jacob is a veteran of the Civil War. How does his experience there affect the way he behaves in the crisis in Friendship? How did the war change him?
6. How would you describe the relationship between Jacob and Doc? How do their different ideas about the world lead to different strategies for handling the outbreak in Friendship?

    3. Jacob is still affected greatly by the war. He is selfless, which is why he puts himself in danger, and feels this weird duty to protecting his town to the extreme. Psychologically, this could be because, after the war, he still wants something to fight for a protect.
    4. Religion is an influence that hangs over the heads of Jacob and Chase and the town of Friendship. It is a constant bee buzzing around their heads, something they are always aware of that is growing ever-more present as the plague continues to envelope the town.
    5. Jacob's experience in the war affects his behavior toward the rest of the citizens of Friendship. He is kind to them, and wants to help them but also knows that he has to do what it absolutely necessary to protect them.

    6. The relationship between Jacob and Doc is professional. Jacob knows his secret practice of electing blood would not be approved by Doc, and they are debating over the need to quarantine, but they unite in that they both want the town to survive.

  2. 3)Jacob elect to treat the bodies of some of the victims even though Doc tells him not too because he feels that it is the right thing to do. For example with Lydia Flynn who is Chase wife he didn't want to bury her the way she was. He never had a girl form the colony and he wanted to have the experience and he wanted to good by her. He wanted to do a good deed for them instead of jus burying in the ground the way they are he believes they deserve a proper burial.
    4) Religious faith plays a huge role in the story. Jacob being a deacon he is assumed to have a strong faith in god and understand why God is punishing people and just believe in everything that he is doing. The outbreak in Friendship in a way crushes majority of the people's faith in god that they once had. Jacob even begins to question his faith once he realize how much the disease is actually spreading and how many people are going to day from it. He doesn't know why God is doing this to him, but he still finds it necessary to pray to him to beg him to get through everything that he going through and to cure his daughter. Even though he prays he still doesn't know if God hears him or if God is going to give him what he is asking for. He is slowly losing his love, faith, and trust in God.
    5) Jacob being a war veteran in away it dictates the things that he does. Some many of the things that is going on reminds him of the time when he was in war, and it takes a bigger toll on him because now he faces a clash between what is right and what I wrong. He could know that what he is doing is right but the thought of the things that happened similar to him changes that perspective in a way that effects him and make him think he shouldn't do you. War made him care a lot more about others than himself. Jacob puts helping others over his family and that causes him to think being around all of these sick people that he gave the disease to Mart and Amelia.
    6) Jacob and Doc has a strong relationship in a sense that they both are trying to find away to contain the disease but not make too much of a fuss about it. Doc wants to quarantine the town he doesn't want anyone coming in or leaving the town. He wants to keep it isolated and try to contain it as much as he can, but he doesn't want to let too many people to find out. Jacob wants to put a sign up and let the people know, but that then could led to the people leaving town and spreading it to the rest of the world. That could make it worst but Jacob doesn't know if its fully isolated or if its already spreading throughout the world neither doers Doc but he still wants to try to isolate in Friendship instead of taking that huge risk.

  3. 3. Jacob is a very prominent figure in the town of Friendship and he is known for his precision and diligence. For this reason, he decided to risk his life and bleed and treat the bodies of victims despite the warning from Doc. He does this because he feels it is the right thing to do, it’s the moral decision. This helps to strengthen the morals of his character and gives the reader a greater idea of who Jacob is. Precision and diligence are so important to Jacob because he’s been in the war and has experienced a lot of things so he wants to make sure everything he does is flawless. Also, he knows that he is looked at strongly in the community so he wants to serve Friendship to the best of his ability.
    4. Religion is a primary theme in this book. It is expressed by the majority of the characters. Jacob is heavily influenced by religion since he is a pastor. However, when his daughter became ill he seemed to question his faith a little and question it a bit. Despite this he continued to pray for her and others. This is due to the fact that prayer and religion is all that the people of Friendship know. It is the only thing keeping them going. To some people, their prayer is not rewarded and they still end up ill.
    5. Jacob is a veteran of the civil war and due to this, the way he handles the crisis is different from others. He is very moral and tries to always do the right thing because he has seen the worst of people and he doesn’t want to endanger Friendship. The war has made Jacob hesitant and I believe he had PTSD.
    6. The relationship between Jacob and Doc sometimes clashes. They each have different ideas as to what to do for Friendship. This leads to some disagreement and Jacob acting behind Doc’s back. I believe their minor disagreements are foreshadowing to something greater.

  4. 3. Jacob elects to bleed and treat the bodies of some victims because he is still effected by war his mindset isn’t right because he still thinks that he is going to war. He is self-sacrificing and that’s why he puts himself in danger. He feels it kind of out of the ordinary to protect his town. This makes people worried about him surviving because he is to focused on war and looking into the war when it’s already over.

    4. It’s highly respected in the town that chase and Jacob live in. religion is everything and it doesn’t get messed around with. It influences Jacob because it plays a major role in their town and is always reminded of it. Their faith is not rewarded because of the plague and everyone is becoming ill.
    5. Jacob is a veteran from the civil war. He is handling friendship differently from the regular people. He had always seen the bad in people and doesn’t want to make it worst so he doesn’t mess with friendships.
    6. The relationship between Jacob and Doc doesn’t always have a great fall it seems to have a downfall. The each have different plans or ideas and it takes a role on their friendship.

  5. 3. Jacob was changed by the war, in more ways than one. He tries to not be selfish, and in doing so, puts himself in harm's way. He feels like it is his job to protect the town he lives in, even if it kills him. He was defending the people in the war, and a part of him can't bear to give that up.

    4. Religious faith has an influence on Jacob and the rest of the town. It is constant reminder, something that they are always aware of.Something that become more and more prevalent as the plague rages on.
    5. After Jacob came back from the war, he started to act different. Everyone in town noticed, but there wasn't much that they could do to change it. But, he is nice to them and dedicates his life to protecting them.

    6. They have a strong, yet professional relationship. Doc doesn't want Jacob to go through the blooding process. And they are discussing quarantine, and whether that is an option for the diseased at this point.
