7.)They're drawn to each other because they're both quiet and have a sense of isolation from the rest of the kids. Seth doesn't try to fit into a mold or fit into the society so Julia gravitates towards him.
8.)We identify more with the clock-timers. We feel that we need some sort of structure of our days rather than going by sunlight rising and setting. Our minds are used to functioning to 24 hours so we would like to stick to that pattern.
9.) It's important that it's set in California due to it always having the sun out as well as it being keen to natural disasters such as earthquakes and landslides. The people in the novel were prepared for these sort of things however the slowing caught them completely off guard.
10.) We felt the book would've ended with the world ending or imploding. We didn't expect for Julia or any of the other characters to still be alive and adapting to life. We think that in the future the world could maybe go back to some sort of "norm" if everyone adapts to the new changes and figures out how to cope with them.
11.) We think that this book has an underlying meaning of trying to warn us to take care of the world or their could be very bad repercussions. Global warming is a very apparent issue today and this novel alludes to that in a sense.
12.) We would all cry! Karla would move because she feels that Rochester would get very ignorant and that everyone would start acting out. Grace would do fun things and try to have great experiences before bad things start happening. Aleah would stay in the house and try to think up scenarios on how to deal with the situation. And Jaymee would try to go to every concert.

  2. 7. I think that Julia is so drawn to Seth because they both are curious about The Slowing. They want to know more. I think he is drawn to her because she talks to him and gets to know him, but she doesn’t talk about his mom like most people do.
    8. I identify with the clock-timers more because I wouldn’t be able to work my life around the sun. I would stay in tune with the 24 hour clock, so that there is at least a little stability in my life.
    9. The setting affects the story because it seems reasonable that The Slowing would happen in California because of all the earthquakes, fires, pollution that is there now. It is important that it takes place there because if it took place anywhere else, then it wouldn’t really affect the readers. Since it does take place there, then it can bring some readers into awareness of the world changing. Many people live in California, and this book can bring their attention to the world and its problems.
    10. I liked the way the book ends because it gives what happens after, but not too much after. I would have like to read another book about Seth after he left. I think the days will continue to change, and the world will continue to slow until it stops completely.
    11. It does make me think about the world. This book seemed so real. It felt like it could actually happen. I think this book is trying to alert people about climate change. I think it is trying to say that people need to be more aware of what is happening.
    12. I think I would prepare like Julia’s mom. I also would wait to see how much it slows each day to see if it is continuously slowing, or if it stops after a few days.

    7. Julia and Seth are both unpopular and quiet children who share similar experiences. Both of their families are drifting apart during and before the slowing. They look to each other because of a mutual understanding.
    8. We would rather follow the real-timers way of telling time. It is a more natural way of adapting to the change of time.
    9. The book is set in California mainly because it is not a third world area of the world, so the novel is able to focus more upon the characters social struggles, other than starvation and other catastrophes. California is also known for having good disaster awareness.
    10. The book's ending seemed like it tied together nicely. The fact that she was retelling the story when she was much older told us that she survived the slowing and explained what happened after the main events of the novel.
    11. The loss of plant life is a condition that exists in both the novel and the natural world. The novel, however, expresses it as an irreversible threat, and essentially offers a perspective to the natural world of our actions against the environment. This aspect of the setting is likely attempting to juxtapose the similarities between the fictional and real-life environments to emphasize the ignorance of human destruction.
    12. If I woke up and learned that the earth's rotation had slowed, I would go and buy a new calender. I would have no significant reaction if it did happen, because society would easily adapt to this situation.

  4. 6. the events described would change along with the outlook. people each remember different things and these are what is relayed in a retelling.
    7. Seth is looking for something to fill the gap his mothers death left; he probably thinks Julia can help with it. Julia likes Seth but in the beginning it was just mere attraction and possibly the idea of him getting her in with thee popular crowd. they both find more then they were expecting.
    8. the realtimers were more identifiable.it makes sense to go with the sun, just like animals. it also makes sense that the slowing would probably be the end of us. so with the things considered i think it was a good idea to continue as the real timers did. even though I would want to be a real timer i think i would have gone along with the clock. I wouldn't be able to leave my life and friends.
    9. with the book set in California, the writer could concentrate on the characters struggles more then the environmental stuff, since it isn't third world. California has god disaster awareness so they also might be more prepared then other countries.
    10. the ending was nice. it told us that they survived the slowing and tied up most of the lose ends. i thinkjust like with everything else, they will carry n until the end does come.
    11. climate change, plant and animal life dying, all exist fictionally and naturally. sometimes the death isnt our fault; the novel gives us a point of view where it is. the book depicts the pollution threat that we humans pse as irrevirsable yet science states that as long as we are not to far in then it can be reversed. we are nt as far along as they were but i d think if we get close, scientists and the warnings will get much more off-putting.
    12. I don't think i would know what to do. the slowing of the earth isn't exactly something we are trained to expect. i don't think school would be in my schedule for that day; i would want to know what was happening.

  5. 7. Why do you think Julia is so drawn to Seth? Why do you think he is drawn to her?
-Julia likes Seth because they are both sort of outcast and quiet people. Also they are both fascinated by the events that are taking place so their mutual attraction is what draws them together.

    8. Did you identify more with the clock-timers or with the real-timers? Which would you be and why?
    - I identify more with the real timers because naturally people wake up and are active when the sun is up and then go to bed or are asleep when it sets. To go by clock time I believe would just simply confuse me .

    9. The slowing affects the whole planet, but the book is set in southern California. How does the setting affect the book? How important is it that the story takes place in California?
-The book is set in California because it could probably bare the burden of the slowing more than other countries .So it would not be that much of a surprise when they survived the slowing.

    10. How do you feel about the way the book ends? What do you think lies ahead for Julia, for her parents and for the world?
-I like the way the book ends but I was also worried because although they survived it there is still the question of what happened to Seth so I am still in suspense.
    11. The slowing throws the natural world into disarray. Plants and animals die and there are changes in the weather. Did this book make you think about the threats that face our own natural world? Do you think the book has something to say about climate change?
-Definitely ,this book made me think about the natural disasters we face and what could happen if one of them were to happen on such a huge scale that it would affect our daily lives. I think it doesn't have as much to do with climactic change but more so natural disasters.

    12. If you woke up tomorrow to the news that the rotation of the earth had significantly slowed, how do you think you would respond? What is the first thing you would do?
-I don't know what I would do because I have never heard or experienced a natural disaster before. So the earth slowing would throw me for a loop and I would probably be in a panic.
