Poetry Cycle Deadlines

For today, you should work on your poetry cycles that were to be completed for next Tuesday.  I will extend the deadline to next Friday if:

GOALS FOR TODAY:  You turn in an outline/chronology with descriptions of the 8-10 poems in your cycle and at least two first drafts of poems.

Remember, you do not need to begin at the beginning.  You can write the poems out of order.
What is important is that you experiment with style, voice, and form as you create your overall narrative through the poems.

  1. Here is the first half of my plan for my poetry cycle. I will update with the rest later.

    Poetry cycle chronology

    Subject: Theodore Roosevelt

    1. Childhood sickness – His asthma and weakness as a child, heavily contrasting his later strength and accomplishments. Hints towards his later interest in history, particularly wars. Young Roosevelt’s mindset seems that of a scholar, but he is unsatisfied with his physical weakness.
    2. Death of Wife and Mother – Both died on the same day. A large “X” and the words “The light has gone out of my life” were written in his diary February 14, 1884. The poem, however, is mostly about naval tactics, as Roosevelt is trying to distract himself with work to cope. His grief is communicated through his description of Naval maneuvers.
    3. The Cuban War – An epic poem brimming with Adrenaline, with Theodore describing the winning battle in the first person.
    4. William McKinley’s death – the 25th president was shot in Buffalo and died a week later. Roosevelt was returning from a hike on Mt. Marcy, after taking in a sunset on the summit, when he received the news. He gives no visible reaction but is ready to accept the responsibility (Possibly: visible in his dignity when climbing the mountain and appreciation of the sunset on the summit. )
